Twenty goals hit the back of the net in the opening week for the 2012/13 TNM Super League season, an increase from last season’s first week.

Seven games played over the weekend produced the 20 goals and the most striking thing was that there was no draw. Around the same stage last season, nine games produced 16 goals, five wins and four draws.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) desk officer Patrick Chisale on Monday extracted meaning from the increase in the goals registered over the weekend.

“It could reflect a fact that some teams had a false impression about their preparedness while others seem to have done their home work right,” said Chisale on Monday.

On Sunday, Mafco beat Kabwafu FC 2-1, Escom United lost 2-1 to Azam Tigers while Kamuzu Barracks beat Epac FC 1-0 through an own goal. Civo United eased past Blue Eagles 2-1.

Three players Welani Nyirenda of Civo United, Diverson Chilemba for Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers’ Rodrick Gonani are tied on two goals each.

Defending champions Silver Strikers were highest scorers after thumping Big Bullets 4-0 on Saturday while Wanderers beat Moyale Barracks 3-2 as Blantyre United fell 1-0 to Red Lions in Zomba.
