2015 Budget: Malawi opposition parties say budget painful

Opposition parties represented in Parliament yesterday expressed worry with the 2015/16 National Budget, which they described as “painful” and “not for the poor”.
“This is the type of budget that will see the poor becoming poorer and the rich getting richer,” said Malawi Congress Party shadow minister of finance Joseph Njobvuyalema, adding that the budget has a lot of shortfalls if compared to previous fiscal plans.

People’s Party spokesperson for finance Ralph Jooma echoed Njobvuyalema’s sentiments and voiced concerns on the newly-introduced tax measures which, he said, will only benefit rich people.
But chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Budget and Finance, Rhino Chiphiko, said government has been prudent, considering that it has been operating without budgetary support from donors.
The budget session has meanwhile been adjourned for two weeks to allow parliamentary committees to scrutinise the budget.
