3 arrested over murder of mentally-challenged man

Police in Thyolo and Chikwawa districts have arrested three men for allegedly killing Black Akimu, 36, from Chikuse Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Makhuwira in Chikwana.

The suspects also tried to sell the deceased’s private parts.

Akimu was a mentally disturbed person.

Chikwawa Police Station spokesperson Mark Munama identified the suspects as Tomas Pelingo, 25, from Chikuse Village, T/A Makhuwira in Chikwawa;  Lucius Banda, 26, from Khwethemule Village, T/A Khwethemule, Thyolo  and  Ephraim Simenti, 19, from Chikuse village, T/A Makhuwira in  Chikwawa.

“The first two were arrested at Makwasa Trading Centre in Thyolo while they were identifying a buyer. The other one was arrested in Chikwawa after investigations,” said Munama.

He said the suspects revealed that they had killed the mentally disturbed person and dumped his body in the Shire River. The body is yet to be found, but the three have been charged with murder, according to police.

Munama cautioned the general public not to be cheated that there is market for human body parts.

“We would like to warn the public that there is no market for private parts in or outside Malawi. Those found or selling them will face the law,” he  said. n
