Blantyre Police say they have so far arrested a total of 35 people suspected to have taken part in the torching of South Lunzu Magistrate’s Court last week Wednesday.

According to Blantyre Police Publicist, Elizabeth Divala, 32 people have been arrested after the police interrogated the first three suspects arrested last week Thursday, a day after the fracas.arrest

“We questioned the three and they stared mentioning names of ring leaders and some who took part in the fracas. These people are being kept at Machinjiri police unit and will be taken to court soon to answer charges of arson contrary to section 337 of the penal code,” said Divala.

An angry mob burnt down the Magistrate’s court, damaging two police vehicles and injuring two police officers.

The fracas started after Ndirande and Chileka police officers brought before the court suspects for hearing earlier in the day whom the mob mistakenly thought to have been answering murder charges in relation to an incident that happened in Machinjiri Township few weeks ago.
