40 called into women’s team camp

The National Women Football Association (NWFA) has called 40 players to camp in preparation for the away friendly match against Botswana on December 3.

The players are expected to arrive at Malawi National Council of Sports today before proceeding to Mpira House in Chiwembe, according to a statement released by NWFA yesterday.womenfootball

NWFA chairperson Severia Chalira said the friendly match will mark official launch of the campaign of building a strong national team by early next year.

She said after the Botswana match, they will play another friendly match against Zambia. “Our focus is to build a strong national team so that it should participate in all international tournaments next year.

“We planned to participate in East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) Cup last September, but this did not materialise. We have, therefore, channelled the funds to these two friendly matches. We are happy that Fifa through Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is sponsoring us,” she said.

FAM vice-president James Mwenda, who is also head of youth and technical subcommittee, confirmed the association’s approval for the team to have the two friendly matches. The team has not been active since last year when it played a friendly match away against Tanzania in November which it lost 2-0. Newly-appointed Malawi women football team coach Stewart Mbolembole said he is looking forward to forming a better team out of the 40 called players.

“Most of the called players are those taking part in the various women football tournaments. Obviously, we will have a good squad,” he said.
