77 Group Limited has expressed interest to sponsor Malawi Queens.

The company’s general manager, Frank Mvula, said in an interview on Friday, his firm was willing to associate itself with Queens.

Mvula disclosed this after donating cooking oil to players and officials ‘to celebrate’ Queens’ exploits at the recent 2015 Netball World Cup (NWC) in Australia.

Despite failing to break into the top five, as they finished sixth, Queens’ play was rated one of the most exciting at the competition and star shooter Mwawi Kumwenda was named Player-of-the-Tournament.

“This is a team which is making us proud as a nation and continues to expose what Malawi can do to the rest of the world. This was to say ‘thank you’ for representing us well.

“As we would like to promote healthy eating within the team, we would like to establish a long-term relationship. We will discuss with the officials how we can be part of the team,” said Mvula.

He said his company was looking at different ways of sponsorship, but said more details will be revealed after meeting the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM).

NAM general secretary, Carol Bapu, confirmed that the company had courted the association, but could not disclose much until a meeting was held and an agreement made.

“For now, let me just say we appreciate the gesture. Yes, they approached us to see if we can establish a long-term relationship. It is a welcome development, but we will have to sit down first,” said Bapu.

A group of Queens’ well-wishers raised K2.7 million for the team through pledges made via social media and the cheque was presented to the players upon the team’s arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe.
