‘Cholera cases draining resources’

Listen to this article

Cholera continues to hit Blantyre forcing Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) to refer the patients from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital to health centres where there are camps.

The cases are impacting on the resources of the DHO as different vehicles have to be made available, including at night, to carry the patients to the health centres.

“Last night we had to carry patients from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital to South Lunzu, Chilomoni and Zingwangwa health centres. The cases obviously are restraining resources,” a senior officer at the Blantyre DHO said on Thursday.

Blantyre DHO spokesperson Chrissie Banda confirmed that cholera has hit Blantyre, but could not give latest figures of patients.

Banda downplayed the rising figures of the cholera and said the cases were declining.
“It is declining now. I cannot give figures because I am in Kasungu. I am not in the office,” she said on Thursday.
