‘DPP ministers, MPs immoral’
Cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) from the DPP have behaved “worse than thieves, looters and liars†by jumping the ship before the body of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika is laid to rest, an MP and an activist have said.
Mangochi North West MP Alfred Mwechumu (UDF) said the declarations of loyalty to President Joyce Banda and joining of her People’s Party (PP) had left Malawians more shocked than the death of the president.
“Thieves, looters and liars would wait at least for one of them to be buried before doing anything. These people cheered Bingu and now they pretend they love Joyce Banda,†said Mwechumu.
He said Malawians were not stupid to trust people who passed laws to stifle freedoms and defended killings of ordinary people.
“People died on July 20 [2011 anti-government demonstrations] and they called them thugs. They should have waited for their president to rest. Now, they want to confuse Banda. Let them have a sense of morals, they are part of our troubled past,†said Mwechumu.
He said Banda should learn from their character that they will dump her where and when opportunities arise, an argument Centre for the Development of the People executive director Gift Trapence agrees.
“This is the highest political immorality one can display in public office. They raped democratic principles at will now they want to jump and proclaim something different,†said Trapence.
He said the Cabinet of Mutharika owes Malawians an explanation on how they messed the economy, denied Malawians their basic rights and how they clapped hands at the effects of the zero deficit budget.
“They have a bad legacy of Malawi at an international level creating a burden to the new administration on human rights, which nullifies their new song of respecting the Constitution,†said Trapence.
