Malawi Government has says it is important to include the youth in the fight against effects of climate change if the campaign is to yield any meaningful results.

Principal environmental officer in the Environmental Affairs Department Michael Makonombera said government is already planning on how best to build the capacity of the youth to further involve them in climate change activities.

He said government is formulating the national climate change policy which will help map the socio-economic transition to climate resilience and low carbon and greener economy.

Makonombera was speaking on Monday at Njewa Primary School in Lilongwe during a children and youth climate rally organised by the National Youth Network on Climate Change (NYNCC) with support from Plan Malawi.

The rally was preceded by a solidarity march from Chitedze Research Station to Njewa schools. Five hundred pupils from Muzu, Sankhani, Njewa and Chitedze schools took part in the march.

NYNCC’s Dominic Nyasulu also took the students through a presentation to familiarise them with the climate change topic and its effects.
