Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has named Malawi Defence Force (MDF) blossoming star Stuart Banda as the country’s flag carrier at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China between August 22 and 29.
According to AAM president Godfrey Phiri, they settled for the long distance runner, who is just two years in the sport, following his current form that has seen him winning the recent 21-kilometre Ku Chawe Mountain Race and the 10 000-metre Track and Field contest.
“He has shown great potential and he has proved that he can make us proud on the international stage. This is his first-ever international experience and we bank our hopes on him,” Phiri said.
At the championships, Banda is expected to contest in the 10 000-metre race and the 5 000 metre event.
He will be Malawi’s only representative because the country was allocated a single slot at the international competition, which occurs every two years.
During the last World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia in 2013, Grevazio Mpani was the country’s ambassador. n
