“There was a time Malawi was producing medal winning athletes in many fields. Right now, we are just concentrating on track and field events when we can also do better in other codes such as discus throwing, high jump, javelin and others,” Phiri said.

He added: “It’s time for AAM to ensure that we are diversifying to increase chances of winning medals. As AAM, our plans are to ensure that we increase the number of athletes in the other codes in the next four years.”

Recently, Malawi sent only one athlete Stewart Banda, to the Beijing World Championship in China.

Phiri said one of the reasons athletes were not participating in other codes was due to lack of funding, equipment and facilities.

“But with the construction of the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, that has all the facilities, we should participate in all codes,” Phiri said. n
