ACB advises internal auditors to be ethical

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Reyneck Matemba has challenged internal auditors to be ethical and exercise professionalism when discharging their duties to avoid recurrence of Cashgate in the public and private sectors.

Speaking on the sidelines of a cocktail reception organised by the Institute of Internal Auditors Malawi (IIA-M) in Lilongwe on Friday, he said a lot has been said about internal auditors in the past four years which has mostly been negative.

Matemba: We need
to look back

Matemba said internal auditors, mainly in the civil service, have let down Malawians by failing to uncover abuse.

He said: “While internal auditors in the civil service have let down Malawians, the private sector has also not been spared. If we look at cases of fraud in 2012 and 2013, I can say that there is no need to celebrate the internal auditors month. We need to look back to 2013 and put in place measures that will curb corruption.”

Matemba, however, said internal auditors could not have busted the Cashgate in 2013 because those who were looting government resources were using sophisticated ways.

Auditor General Stevenson Kamphasa said there is need to have people of high integrity both in public and private sectors.

“Cashgate involved players from the private sector as well as in government, but this could have been avoided. Even if Integrated Financial Management Information System [Ifmis] was weak, people of integrity could not have stolen,” he said.

IIA-M president Pamela Kuwali said some challenges they face come about because of the absence of a law which will make it mandatory for auditors to belong to the body for easy monitoring.

The month of May was set aside to celebrate the role of internal auditors worldwide. n
