Affiliates suspicious of NAM

Some affiliates of Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) are suspicious with the way the association is handling the issue of forthcoming elections.
This follows NAM’s move to keep a lid on the elective assembly date despite the association’s president Rosy Chinunda insisting that the polls will be conducted within this month.

The development is in conflict with section 24.2 (a) of NAM’s constitution, which stipulates that “the general secretary shall call for nominations 45 days before the date of the annual general meeting [AGM] in which elections for the executive committee are due.”

Chalusa: It will be very unfair
Nevertheless, NAM regional affiliates have expressed displeasure with the arrangement, saying it will breed chaos in the entire electoral process.
“If it is really true that the polls will be conducted this month, then it will be very unfair to us, affiliates, because we need to be given ample time for preparations, as the constitution demands,” said Southern Region Netball Committee (SRNC) chairperson Judith Chalusa.

“I do not know why they deliberately cause confusion in straightforward issues.”
Chalusa also pleaded with NAM to hold AGM and elections on separate dates.

“In 2013, NAM set AGM and elections on the same day and this brought chaos in the electoral process because some important issues were not sorted out due to lack of time,” she said.
On his part, Central Region Netball League (CRNL) chairperson Fanuel Katengeza said they are looking forward to NAM to announce the dates.

“As NAM executive committee members, we need to know what is happening in our fold but we do not know why our leaders are playing hide and seek,” Katengeza said.
But Chinunda said yesterday: “Everything is in place for the assembly this month but the secretariat will announce the dates in due course. Tell those doubting Thomases they should not lose their sleep over the issue.”

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) executive secretary George Jana said: “We expect that the constitution will be followed in the electoral process.” 
