Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Bright Msaka says alumni need to assist their schools in development of education.

Msaka, a Zomba Catholic Secondary School alumnus, said this during the Zomba Catholic Secondary School Alumni first annual general meeting (AGM) whose agenda was to appreciate the challenges the institution is facing.

“If former students can assist their schools, some of the problems can be reduced. I, therefore, ask the alumni not to forget their previous schools but assist wherever possible,” he said.

The school’s head teacher Brother Francis Jumbe said infrastructure and lack of teaching and learning materials are the main challenges at the school.

He said this has been aggravated by the increase in the school’s enrolment from two streams to three when the school was supposed to have two streams.

“Despite the growing intake of learners we are using the same facilities like hostels, classrooms, libraries, sanitation among other things that are failing us to deliver quality education with ease,” he said.

Alumnus Peter Mwanza, former vice-chancellor of Mzuzu University who is also Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) chairperson, commended the school for maintaining the legacy of producing best students despite challenges.

Another prominent alumnus, FDH Financial Holdings group chief executive officer Thomson Mpinganjira said apart from infrastructural development the alumni is going to pay fees for some needy students.

“We appeal to the school’s ex-students to subscribe to the membership of this alumni link so that we empower students to achieve their goals,” he said. n
