Anglicans call for witchcraft law amendment

The Anglican Church in Malawi has asked parliamentarians to consider reviewing the witchcraft law to correspond with the reality on the ground.

Speaking in Chikhwawa last week during an annual celebration of the church’s first missionaries in Malawi, head of the Lower Shire Anglican Archdeaconry, Raphael Mponda, argued that much as the country’s laws do not recognise the existence of witchcraft, the act exists.

“It is time we reviewed some of these laws because one wonders why Malawian laws do not recognise witchcraft when we all know that it does exist,” said Mponda.

He explained that, time and again, faith leaders attend to Christians who voluntarily repent after disclosing that they were either practising or teaching children witchcraft.

But, without directly referring to the witchcraft issue, Chikwawa district commissioner (DC) Alex Mdooko urged the church to stand up against all vices affecting society.

The church’s concern comes amid rising cases of mob justice executed by disgruntled citizens who feel the law promotes evil by shielding those suspected to be practising or teaching witchcraft.
