Fallen Dedza Diocese Bishop Emmanuel Kanyama was laid to rest yesterday at a ceremony graced by President Peter Mutharika and Vice-President Saulos Chilima, among other dignitaries.

During the funeral mass that was led by Arch Episcope for the Diocese of Lilongwe Tarcizius Ziyaye,

Chilima, who spoke on behalf of Mutharika, described Kanyama as a learned person who never took advantage of his vast academic and theological knowledge to be a resounding gong.

He said: “The President remembers the late Fr Kanyama as more of a listening than a telling person. He was an orderly person who did all things with high commitment and dedication. He was also a loving person.”

Mutharika consoled the bereaved family with K3.2 million and also contributed K1 million towards the care of late Fr Kanyama’s aged mother.

“The President, through the Arch-Diocese of Lilongwe, has offered K1 million to the mother of the late Kanyama as a contribution towards her care considering that she is of age,” said Chilima.

In his remarks, Bishop Montfort Sitima of Mangochi Diocese challenged all people present that they must conduct themselves in a godly manner.

Said Sitima: “Politicians from government and opposition side alike, if given a chance can you confidently say that ‘God you know everything, you know that I love you’? Bishop Kanyama has challenged us that we need to have confidence in our behaviour.”

Kanyama was born in 1962 in Traditional Authority Kasumbu in Dedza. He had a doctorate in philosophy which he attained in Rome. n
