BBA: The journey so far

Listen to this article

It has been eight years since the inception of the African version of Big Brother and so far we have already witnessed seven dramatic editions of the show with eight winners. The eighth edition starts tonight.

With Big Brother Africa (BBA) back on TV screens, people should not only expect the run for the grand prize but also romance, emotions, suspense, fights and arguments, beef, gossip and lots of more action.

Malawi has been represented by Zein Dudha in season one, Code Sangala twice, Hazel Warren, Mzamose Chibambo, Tendai Namate-Lomwe, Felicia Ngoma and last season’s Nafe and Wati Kulemeka.

Four times in the finals, the only time the country sniffed the dollars was in season 3 when Warren was a runner-up.

Unfortunately, she lost to Angola’s Rico Venacio and many fans across the continent felt the quiet Malawian was robbed of the chance to become an instant millionaire.

Since season 3, different titles have been tagged to the show such as Wild, wicked and wacky, the mighty Big Brother Revolution, All Stars, AmplifiedStargame and now to be launched The Chase.

One cannot avoid but take their memory back through the dramatic tasks, emotional nominations, heart breaking evictions that leave both some viewers and housemates in a state of shock–not forgetting the little catfights, romance and attractions that contestants develop towards each other.

There is $300 000 [K96 million] up for grabs for the winner. But the question still remains: Will Malawi make it this time?

“It is my wish that Malawi is represented by jacked-up people whose goal is to win the green bucks and nothing more. We are tired of watching others become instant millionaires and it is our time to do that,” said BBA follower Charles Gani.

However, Memory Njasi thinks Malawi needs a miracle to win in the leading continental series.

“I doubt if Malawi will ever win in BBA having missed Season 3 where Hazel Warren reached the finals,” said Njasi.
