Beach Soccer Malawi sounds SOS

In its annual report submitted to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, seen by The Nation, Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) has warned that the sport risks dying because of lack of sponsorship.

The report says despite continued progress in terms of talent, organisation and strengthening of structures of the game, BSM still has an uphill task to secure sponsorship for various leagues.

“Lack of sponsorship remains a serious hurdle, which if not tackled, will thwart strides we have made on the technical front.

“BSM leadership is, therefore, appealing to FAM and the corporate world not to nip the flower in the bud by neglecting the game at this crucial period of transformation,” reads part of the report signed by BSM general secretary David Saddo.

In the report, Saddo says without self-sacrifice of the executive and partial subvention from FAM, the sport could have died a natural death.

“The success of the game so far can be alluded to the unflinching and committed leadership of the executive, which regardless of the insurmountable challenges, has kept firm in ensuring that the spirit of the game continues to grow like bush fire,” reads the report.

For three successive years beach BSM has failed to form a national team amid many sponsorship pledges.

In a separate interview, BSM president Kondwani Gondwe said they are struggling financially because they have no committed sponsorship.
