Big Bullets’ Osman to choose politics or football
Big Bullets FC chief supporter Isaac Jomo Osman risks losing his position at the club due to his involvement in active politics as he is aspiring to be a councillor in Bangwe Ward in Blantyre.
The development follows a Super League of Malawi (Sulom) directive to all its affiliates that those that hold positions in football administration at any level should not be involved in politics.
Sulom general secretary Williams Banda yesterday said the move is not targeting any particular individual.
“We have observed that it is important to remind all stakeholders that football regulations as contained in Sulom constitution do not allow officials at any level to be involved in active politics.
“We would, therefore, like to humbly request those vying for positions in the forthcoming tripartite elections to resign from their football positions. In other words, they should choose one,” said Banda.
He added that they expect clubs to take up the issues with their officials who are pursuing both.
“In the event that either the club or an individual involved ignores the advice, then appropriate action will be taken,” warned Banda.
Osman yesterday said he was aware of the development and blamed it on politics.
“The issue has already been brought to my attention, but what I can say is that this is all dirty politics.
“When I was contesting for the position of BB main supporters’ committee chairperson, the authorities, including Sulom, knew that I was vying for the position of councillor, it was not a secret, why did they not bar me at that particular time? Even Bullets supporters knew my intentions and if they so wished, they could have barred me,” he said.
He, however, said he is not losing sleep over this matter.
“The ball is in my court, but what I can say is that if I am pushed out, I will not get worried because I achieved my goal that was to remove the people that did not have the welfare of the team at heart.
“I love Bullets with all my heart. Even if I quit [as Bullets supporters chairperson], I will remain a staunch Bullets fan,” he said.
The club’s chairperson Kondi Msungama said he has already taken up the issue with Osman.
“Rules are rules bwana. We advised him accordingly and the ball is in his court to choose between football and politics,” said Msungama.
