The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) are today expected to submit reports detailing progress into the investigation of the K61 billion wealth of former president Bingu wa Mutharika’s estate.

The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament had earlier written the ACB, FIU, Auditor General and Transparency International through the local National Integrity Platform (NIP) to investigate claims in a motion Mzimba West member of Parliament Harry Mkandawire (People’s Party-PP) brought to the House that Mutharika’s wealth was more than the stated K61 billion.

The House referred the issue to the Public Accounts Committee which tasked the bodies to investigate the claims and report back to the committee because it had no investigative capacity.

Committee chairperson Alekeni Menyani yesterday confirmed that ACB, FIU and NIP would be appearing before his committee today and Wednesday to report back on their findings.

He said the committee wrote to the investigation agencies last year with instructions to probe the authenticity of documents which Mkandawire submitted to the House alleging that Mutharika’s wealth was stashed in various bank accounts and various countries and had eluded the scrutiny of the government a
