Bloodsuckers fear disrupts social services in Mulanje

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa says rumours of alleged bloodsuckers circulating in Mulanje and some districts in the Southern Region have affected delivery of social services.

The minister, who is also lawmaker for Mulanje Central, said this on Saturday in the district during prayers the district pastors fraternal organised to comfort and give hope to the affected people.

“Tourism has been affected because people that were coming to see our beautiful Mulanje Mountain have stopped. They are afraid of being suspected to be bloodsuckers,” said Nankhumwa.

He said pregnant mothers are also affected as ambulances cannot move at night to pick them in their villages.

He expressed regret that some people have lost their lives for being suspected to be bloodsuckers.

Nankhumwa, however, hoped that with the prayers, the situation would change as people would put their faith in God.

Commissioner of Malawi Police Service responsible for community policing, Willie Mwaluka, said to date no one has been arrested in connection with blood sucking.

He said police officers have been deployed to many areas in the district to beef up security.

Pastor Austin Chigalu of Assemblies of God said people have been affected by such cases for long and it is time they turned to God for solace. n
