Blue Eagles Sisters make history in GOtv opener

Blue Eagles Sisters made history at the College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre os Saturday when they beat Bingu Tigresses 39-37 in the opening match of the GOtv Netball Champions League.

The triumph against the Presidential Netball champions means Eagles are the first Lilongwe-based team to have ever won against all Blantyre-based netball giants such as Tigresses, Escom Sisters and MTL Queens.

“Now, we can say we are happy and proud that our mission has been accomplished. Tigresses were the only Blantyre-based side we had never beaten. I thank my girls for doing the work in the GOtv contest,” said the Eagles’ coach Sam Kanyenda.

However, their triumph did not come on a silver platter as they had to sweat for it.

Tigresses led 13-12 in the first quarter before the Eagles took a 21-19 lead in the second segment. The teams tied on 30-30 in the third quarter.

Tigresses coach Charles Mhango congratulated their opponents and attributed their defeat to pressure.

“We played with pressure in the dying minutes of the game. We lost most of the balls as we desperately wanted to get back in the game. However, I congratulate Blue Eagles on their fighting spirit,” he said.

According to Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu, each of the five contesting teams, namely, the Eagles, Tigresses, Escom Sisters, MTL Queens and Civonets, will meet four times in home-and-away encounters before the winner of the K1 million first prize is identified.

In another GOtv match on Saturday, MTL Queens, led by their veteran shooter Mary ‘Atcheya’ Waya, managed a 38-27 win over Civonets. They led 12-6, 23-15 and 31-20 in the first three quarters.
