Months after being on a peacekeeping mission in the DRC, prominent Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Wilson Masamba will return into the boxing ring on October 26 at Kamuzu Institute for Sports’ in Lilongwe.
Masamba—famous for mesmerising footwork and subtle ducking skills—is expected to re-oil his boxing hub against veteran pugilist Actas Mchombo in an eight-round undercard for a non-title fight between Salimu Chazama and Bright Mdoka.
“I am back for real. I even feel much stronger now. However, I promise not to knock out Mchombo in the early rounds because I want boxing fans to enjoy the fight,” he said
He, however, warned all boxers— who have been making ‘noise’ when he was away that they should prepare well because he will come after them after his forthcoming non-title bout.
According to New Dawn Boxing Promotions’ director Mike Chimaliza, whose body is promoting the bouts in partnership with Pro Active Energy Drink, they asked Masamba if he could get a chance of trying himself out in the ring and he did not hasitate to grab the opportunity to check his fitness.
“He has accepted to take on Mchombo in an undercard fight as a way of rejuvenating his boxing career after over six months on a peacekeeping mission. He said since he returned from DRC, he has been training hard at his base, Kamuzu Barracks’ and he is ready for a fight,” Chimaliza said.
Chimaliza promised to organise more bouts for Masamba. n
