Bravehearts men’s and ladies’ teams on Saturday made an impressive start to the third edition of the Vixens Annual Invitational Basketball Tournament in Zimbabwe by winning their opening games to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The men’s team beat Falcons 36-17 in their opening match before seeing off Foxes 41-10 at Doom Belvadare College Sports Complex in Harare.

The ladies’ side was also on song, beating CUT-W 42-10 and University of Zimbabwe 36-29 to reach the last eight where they were scheduled to face either City Hornets or Hustlerz last evening.

According to reports from Zimbabwe, Hydin Mafuta was outstanding for Bravehearts men’s team with spectacular display in both games while Esther Katungwe shone for the ladies’ side.

Bravehearts patron Griffin Kalua, who sponsors the two teams through his company G.Y. Imports and Exports, said he was impressed with the teams’ performance.

“But Zimbabwean teams play much better than us, but we caught them off-guard because they did not expect a spirited display from Malawian teams and by the time woke up from their slumber, it was a bit too late,” he said.

Kalua said the aim of taking part in such tournaments is to accord the players international exposure.
