Bravehearts win G.Y Mzuzu Basketball Tournament

Bravehearts men and ladies’ teams on Sunday won the G.Y. Imports and Exports tournament at Katoto court in Mzuzu.

The tournament was organised to spice up the opening of the company’s Mzuzu branch offices.

Bravehearts  ladies defeated Northern Zone Basketball League (Nozobal) All-Stars side 69-30 while the men’s team overcame fellow visitors, Magang’a from Zomba 70-54.

To qualify for the finals, Bravehearts defeated hosts Pistons 84-54 earlier on while Magang’a beat Nkhulande, also from Mzuzu, 72-61.

Bravehearts team manager Ulemu Khonyongwa said they were happy to emerge winners of a tournament organised by their sponsors.

“It is a double victory with our ladies category also having emerged triumphant,” he said.

Bravehearts men received K200 000 while the ladies side pocketed K150 000.

As runners-up, Magang’a and Nozobal Ladies All-Stars received K150 000 and K75 000, respectively.

Mzuzu City Mayor William Mkandawire, who was the guest of honour, urged G.Y. Imports and Exports to continue sponsoring basketball.

“G.Y. Imports and Exports is playing a big role towards the development of the sport which is regaining its lost glory,” he said.

The company’s  managing director Griffin Kalua said they will continue to sponsor local basketball so that it earns international recognition.

“As G.Y. Imports and Exports, we will continue partnering the game so that it reaches lofty heights,” he said. n
