Break-in at Auditor General’s offices

Unidentified people on Wednesday night broke into the Auditor General’s office in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, and stole several laptops, office files and damaged computer accessories.

The National Audit Office (NAO) public relations officer, Thomas Chafunya, confirmed the break-in on Thursday.

“About 30 offices belonging to senior officials were broken into, several computer peripherals were vandalised, laptops were stolen and several pieces of information in hard copies was taken away,” said Chafunya.

He said the robbers also wanted to steal an NAO vehicle which was parked within the premises, but failed.

Chafunya said the office is still assessing the extent of the damage and its value and the police are also investigating the matter.

Asked whether the break-in is linked to the K400 million  (about $2.4 million) investigation that Auditor General’s office is involved in with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Chafunya said: “It will be wrong to make such a conclusion. The nation should be assured that despite the break-in, we still have control of valuable information and data.”

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said he had not yet received information about the incident.
