Lilongwe-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Napoleon Dzombe recently donated 50 bags of maize and 1 000 packets of Vita Meal to Nkhotakota District Hospital.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Dzombe said he was saddened to learn of the challenges facing the hospital from Nkhotakota district commissioner Charles Thombozi.
“I was born to help people and it feels good to assist someone in need. That is why I decided to donate 50 bags of maize and 1 000 packets of Vita Meal from my plant [Madalitso Food Production],” said Dzombe.
The 2009 Nation Achiever has also pledged to provide 500 packets of vita meal to the hospital every month till July this year.
Thombozi thanked Dzombe for his generosity and for his swift response after learning of the problems facing the hospital.
“This is an answer to our prayers because we approached several organisations and well-wishers only Dzombe responded positively.
“After giving us the foodstuffs, Dzombe asked if we had a means of taking the items to Nkhotakota. We told him we did not and he extended his generosity further by offering to transport the food stuffs from Lilongwe to Nkhotakota,” said Thombozi.
Nkhotakota district health officer (DHO) Wanangwa Chisenga said the problem of food shortage came about because the hospital has huge debts and as such, most suppliers are unwilling to do business with the institution.
“As a manager, we noted some three months ago that we would experience food shortages and we started approaching organisations and well-wishers, and Dzombe was one of the people who were approached to assist,” said Thombozi.
He asked other organisations to emulate the example set by Dzombe by assisting the hospital.
Nation Publication Limited crowned Dzombe 2009 Nation Achiever because of his philanthropic activities.
