Drug Fight Malawi executive director Nelson Zakeyu says excessive alcohol consumption is one factor that leads most people in the country to poverty.
In an interview on Tuesday, Zakeyu said most people who drink heavily end up in lifelong debts as they spend most of their money to quench their “insatiable appetite for alcohol” other than improving their lives.
He said children and other dependents emerge victims out their parents’ drinking habits.
“Due to heavy alcohol intake, parental roles are neglected or abandoned altogether. When people drink heavily, households collapse and jobs are lost.
“Instead of scarce resources going to children’s education they go to alcohol, depriving them of their rights to education,” he said.
