Police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) yesterday arrested a woman for attempting to externalise $40 500 (about K31 million) which she had concealed in her underwear.

The incident happened barely a week after KIA Police also arrested a woman for attempting to take out of the country forex without authorisation from the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).

In yesterday’s case, Dalitso Chimbuli, holder of Malawi passport number MA 597081, was arrested in the departures lounge around 1pm before boarding a Dar es Salaam-bound Ethiopian Airways flight.

In an interview, KIA Police spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde Lee said that after being physically searched by police officers manning the searching point, it was observed that she had a hard object in her underwear which could not have been a sanitary pad.

He said the woman refused to go and take out the object, a development that raised the suspicions of the police who referred the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department officers in the lounge.

Said Chitonde Lee: “The suspect was taken into a cubical where she was physically searched by female police officers and found the said forex concealed in her underwear like a sanitary pad while wrapped in a toilet tissue paper.”

He said Chimbuli failed to produce supporting documents for the cash; hence, she was arrested.

Chitonde Lee said the suspect has since been granted police bail and is expected to appear in court to answer charges of illegal possession of foreign currency and attempting to externalise forex.

She comes from Kafanikhale Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Msakambewa in Dowa District.
