Diamonds Netball Club’s days of poverty are now over after acquiring sponsorship from Capital Oil Refining Industry Limited, manufacturers of Kukoma Cooking Oil.
The defending champions of Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League (SRNL), who have been languishing in poverty since Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) withdrew their financial backing five years ago, will now be called Kukoma Diamonds.

During a press briefing in Blantyre yesterday, the company’s sales and marketing manager Chrispin Sinjani said they will announce the actual sponsorship package during the launching ceremony in two weeks.
“We will reveal more details about the package soon. But what everybody should know is that the team will from now be called Kukoma Diamonds. We thought of supporting the team after noting that netball is the sport that is ranking high among sports disciplines in the country,” Sinjani said.
Nevertheless, the company’s senior manager John Damson cautioned the team to be disciplined in anything they do to preserve the good image of the oil manufacturer.
“We do not want the team to be associated with scandals such as steamy arguments with umpires. Whenever there are differences, let us discuss such issues amicably. Do not take any small issues to the media,” he said.
On his part, Diamonds’ technical director Isaac Chimwala, who was accompanied by head coach Griffin Saenda, team manager Sellah Mwafulirwa, treasurer Tracy Kamanga and netballers Carol Mtukule Ngwira, Towera Nyirenda and Jessica Sanudi, said they will do anything possible to preserve the hard-earned financial backing.
“We know where we are coming from and where we are going. We will do anything possible to safeguard the sponsorship. We also promise that we will fill the company’s mantel piece with trophies as a thank you for rescuing us from poverty,” Chimwala said.
