Speaking to the crowd after the cleanup exercise, Chalamanda said the event was meant to demonstrate to city residents, the corporate and public sectors that there is need to have passion to make the city clean even when elected as councillor for the area.

“This is a project that has to continue and handled by city residents and vendors themselves. We also need to ensure that waste is thrown in dustbins and not anyhow if we are to champion good sanitary and hygienic measures,” he said.

Chalamanda further said he would ensure that streets have gadgets where people can litter waste to contain challenges that accompany poor sanitation and hygiene.

“As a city council we should also ensure that the issue of security in towns and residential areas is looked into to deal with theft or armed robberies. This needs a 24-hour police patrol and erection of street lights,” he said.

Chalamanda, a lawyer by profession, said he would lobby for the establishment of modern markets that can accommodate more businesspersons.

“When you look at the markets, they are small and this is bad for vendors. We have to devise a way that will accommodate all vendors in modern markets so that they ply their business freely,” said Chalamanda.
