Chazama’s win greeted with derision

Salimu Chazama’s victory over Chrispin Moliati in the national lightweight category was greeted with derision by most fans who felt Moliati was supposed to be declared winner.

The 12-round bout, which took place at Lilongwe Community Centre ground, lived up to its billing and pulled a huge crowd.

While Chazama was aggressive and charging a lot, his punches were wild and most of them failed to land.

On the other hand, Moliati was excellent at dodging and landing punches while reacting.

Despite all three judges giving him the fight after 12 rounds, Moliati appeared to have dominated the bout and a huge section of the fans expressed displeasure with the judges.

Moliati congratulated Chazama on the win though he expressed disappointment with the outcome.

“It’s painful, I felt I deserved to win, but the judges had their say. Congrats to Chazama,” said Moliati.

Chazama admitted it was a tough fight, but maintained that he deserved to win.

“It was a great fight. All of us gave our all to win. I thank God that I have carried the day,” said Chzama.

Moliati trainer Godfrey Jalare said judges are killing the sport in this country.

“It was clear that Moliati was the winner. He dominated all the seven rounds. The other remaining rounds were equally shared. It is a strange decision,” said Jalare. n
