Popular club Chez Ntemba has distanced itself from reports that the club has banned playing local music, saying it only rebuffed Tay Grin’s new hit Kanda over the weekend.

Online reports were rife that Blantyre’s Chez Ntemba has stopped playing local music citing artists’ penchant of imposing exorbitant fees when they are hired by the club to perform at its venues.

Both Tay Grin’s promoter Kimpho Loka and Chez Ntemba manager John Numbi confirmed that Kanda was turned down by the club.

Numbi said Kanda was rebuffed because it was brought on CD.

“I wish to deny that Chez Ntemba has stopped playing or promoting local music. But I can confirm that we turned down Tay Grin’s Kanda because it was brought on CD. Our entertainment equipment no longer uses CDs,” said Numbi.

He said Chez Ntemba will always promote local music where necessary, urging local artists to follow proper channels when delivering their music.

“If there is one club in Malawi that gives preference to local music then Chez is leading the list. And we will continue promoting local music,” said Numbi, challenging that local spies should be deployed to the club to appreciate their stand on local music.

Kanda is Tay Grin’s new single which features Nigerian’s Orezi and local artist Sonye.
