The establishment of district chapters for the Musician’s Union of Malawi (MUM) will help deal with problems musicians face at local level, re-elected president for the union’s Chikwawa chapter said on Sunday.

Speaking after he won for a second term, Lyson Olomani said dealing with piracy is easier in a decentralised scene.

“As musicians, we know the people who burn and sell music. It is even easy for us to get to police right here, than wait for the national body. Besides, within the district, we will organise joint shows to build ourselves so that in time, we build ourselves and venture into more shows beyond the district,” said Otomani.

During the polls held at Dyeratu, Dorothy Chibambo was elected as Olomani’s deputy while Cassim Makawa was elected as secretary with Silvia Pende as his vice. Lisnet Chidothe became the treasurer. Steven Muthama became the chapter’s advisor, taking over the baton from gospel musician Brenda Chombo-Banda.

According to MUM Southern Region chapter president Papa Mtume, after Chikwawa, new polls will be held in Nsanje, Mulanje and Mwanza by the end of the year.
