Celebrated Malawian boxer Isaac Chilemba’s bid to reclaim the World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title was thwarted on Saturday night when he lost to Eleider Alvarez on a majority decision at the Vidéotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada.

According to a report on Boxing News 24, the 12-round title eliminator was a tight contest and the result was met with mixed feelings.

The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 118-110 and 115-113. The 118-110 score was ridiculous. The fight was a lot closer than that score.

With the win, Alvarez is now the WBC mandatory challenger to WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson next year.

The unbeaten Eleider Alvarez who boasts19-0, (including 10 KOs) fought well in the first four rounds, but Chilemba (24-3-2, 10 KOs) appeared to take over the fight from the fifth round on and dominated the action.

“Alvarez looked tired and spent in the last eight rounds, and not properly motivated to attack Chilemba like he had in the first four rounds of the fight.

“Alvarez, who started fast, withered a bit in the middle rounds, and basically survived in the later frames, working with a bit of an empty gas tank down the stretch. Chilemba certainly won more than two rounds, and that card from Connecticut judge Peter Hary has been rightly picked apart already,” reads part of the report.

The 28-year-old Malawian could not be reached for comment yesterday. n
