Chilima attends Way of the Cross

Christians in the country yesterday joined the world in commemorating the Way of the Cross, an event that depicts images of Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers.

In Lilongwe, Vice-President Saulos Chilima joined thousands of St Patrick’s Catholic parishoners in a procession from St. Ignatius Parish in Area 30, Malawi Police Headquarters through the Police Quarters, Area 18 suburb to St Patrick’s Parish.

Chilima, who was the event’s master of ceremonies, guided fellow Christians before taking his turn to carry the cross from station 11 to the last one.

Among high-profile officials who attended the procession in Lilongwe, which was led by St Patricks Parish priest Maxwell Kubalasa, were Inspector General of Police Lexten Kachama and chief director in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disabilities and Social Welfare Mary Shawa.

In Blantyre, Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Roman Catholic Church called on Malawians to unite as a Godfearing nation.

Msusa led Christians in observing the event that had 14 stations from Chichiri Primary School to Limbe Cathedral where they laid wreaths at a place that symbolises the biblical Golgotha.
