Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima has called upon Malawians to cultivate a spirit of self-reliance if the country is to move out of poverty.

Speaking at St Pius X Catholic Parish 50 years of Anniversary (Golden Jubilee), Chilima said the country cannot develop if its citizens continue relying on handouts.

Said Chilima: “We must know that it is time we developed a spirit of independence. As a country we have probably failed to realise maximum economic progress in 50 years because of the handouts spirit.

Do you think they can cross all these oceans to come and assist Malawians first when their own people have problems? Unless we change our mindset as a Malawians and as a country, we will develop,” said the vice president.

Chilima also praised the Catholic Church in Malawi and other churches for playing an integral role in the country’s development.

On his part, Archbishop Thomas Msusa of the Blantyre Arch Diocese preached peace and love among Malawians and urged Catholic faithful to deepen their Christian lives in line with the Roman Catholic values.

Chilima_arrivingMsusa said as the church’s Christians were celebrating their golden jubilee, it was also important to reflect on their 50-year journey as they ponder on the next 50 years.

During the celebrations, the parish also honoured several individuals such as Father Allan Chamgwera, Emeritus Bishop of Zomba Diocese, who served the parish for 13 years.

Earlier, the Archbishop blessed and inaugurated the St Pius Great Hall Aula Magna which has been constructed through Christians’ contributions to the tune of more than K100 million.

Among others, St Pius Church pioneered the now popular Children’s Christmas and several church groups such as the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO).

During the celebration, Chilima also announced that President Peter Mutharika had donated 500 chairs to the hall project which will be delivered on 15th and 16th September.

  1. This is nonsense. Whats the different between “handouts” and “donation.” You are telling people to desist from handouts and then you give them handouts there and then. Do you know what you fools are really talking about? Handouts in all their forms must be stopped, and not only those targeting poor people. Otherwise, stop the nonsense and fuck up.

    1. You can say that again! And the 500 chairs must be from Bingu’s loot. Kagwereni uko!!!

    1. You are right Someone is just giving handouts. Look at the MK 100 000 being given to students at Mzuni. Why not give scholarships and announce so that students can work towards that. or build classes at Mzuni. Time will tell

  2. Misguided comments. Unlike your JB’s handouts, the hall will serve the community rather than individuals. People will be holding meetings, weddings, choir festivals, etc. Hence, the donation of chairs is most appropriate.

  3. Chilima is giving handouts. taking advantage of his position being a Catholic. Why is he only going to Catholic Churches. Check that. Time will come
