Chilumba earn Super League promotion

Karonga-based Chilumba Barracks on Saturday won the Simama Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Premier League championship to earn promotion into the top-flight TNM Super League.

Chilumba were awarded the game against Nkhata Bay United following United’s failure to show up for the match in Chilumba.

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sponsored side, who needed a point to seal the title, have 83 points with two games remaining to wrap up their campaign.

NRFA fixtures secretary Ollens Msonda confirmed that the game had been awarded to Chilumba by a 2-0 margin as per rules and regulations governing the league.

Chilumba have joined Dwangwa United of Nkhotakota and Max Bullets of Chiradzulu who emerged champions in the Central and Southern regional leagues respectively.

Second-placed Karonga United played out a goalless draw against Kawaza. The results mean that Karonga have 76 points from 32 games and can only go as far as 79 points.

Chilumba team manager Kazizwa Banda said he was happy that their dream of earning promotion into the flagship league had come true.

“We are now done with our campaign. We thank God for the success. It was not that easy. We will now shift focus to preparing for the Super League,” he said.

NRFA chairperson Lameck Khonje has since hailed Chilumba for their consistent performance. n
