Chiradzulu chief grateful to Amitofo centre

Senior Chief Chitera of Chiradzulu has commended Amitofo Care Centre of Singapore for donating relief items to families affected by hunger in the district.

Speaking after the donation, Chitera said the hunger situation has worsened due to prolonged drought the country faced this year.

She said: “The little that [some] farmers harvested this year has finished and most of them have nothing to eat. I thank Amitofo for the donation which has eased the situation.”

The chief advised the beneficiaries not to be wasteful in their consumption of the food as the lean season is long.

Chitera appealed to other well-wishers to emulate the example set by Amitofo by helping her subjects.

Amitofo Care Centre secretary general Colin Gob said they decided to assist because of the hunger the country is facing.

One of the beneficiaries, Peter Kachere, thanked Amitofo for the timely  donation.

The donation comprised maize, sugar, salt, cooking oil and beans.

The group will also make a similar donation in Mulanje District.

About 6.5 million people are in need of food aid following prolonged dry spells, especially in the Southern Region and parts of the Central Region, which wilted maize crop. n
