Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia on Wednesday handed over various sports items to 10 outstanding football and volleyball teams in Mzuzu.

The teams that received the items were: Fish Eagles, Mchengautuwa Reserves, Yimnet FC, Katoto Full Primary School and Masasa Girls football teams as well as Police Claws, Moyale Barracks, Mzuzu Academy, Katoto Secondary School and Katoto Trickers volleyball teams.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Mzuzu Stadium, the Sports Minister said the donation is part of her ministry’s initiative to promote sports at local level.

Chiumia: It is necessary to encourage greater financial support

Chiumia thanked United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) for funding the project.

She said the items which include balls, whistles, pumps and nets will be distributed across the country but the process has started in Northern Region.

“We appreciate the challenges various local clubs are facing in the country. It is clear that they lack equipment and we thank Unicef for the support,” said Chiumia.

Speaking on behalf of sports teams, Fish Eagles FC technical director Joseph Bolamoyo-Misinde thanked the minister for coming up with such an initiative, saying lack of sports equipment is the major challenge facing many local sports clubs.

To come up with the list of beneficiaries in Mzuzu, a special committee was set in place to select the teams based on how organised they are
