Cilic empowers Mulanje women

Civil Liberties Committee (Cilic) has empowered some women in Mulanje with skills to hold leadership positions in their communities.

The women, drawn from different traditional authorities (T/As), were trained under Accelerated Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (Agewe) programme.

One of the participants, Mary Duwe, said she is now in a leadership position in a trade union in the Ministry of Labour, Youth,Sports and Manpower Development in Mulanje.

“I am also a session clerk at my church, a thing that was not possible before. I have also spread the message to my fellow women about the need for us to take up leadership positions,” she said.

Another participant, Esther Jasi, from T/A Chipungu, said she is an adviser to a village bank, a position, she said, was previously held by a man.

Cilic project officer Felix Chikalira said since 2012, Agewe project has helped women to take leadership decision-making positions at local level.

He expressed happiness that traditional leaders were playing an important role to empower women.

Agewe is funded by Royal Norwegian Embassy through NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN). n
