Civo ex-co backs coach Manda

Civil Service United (Civo)under fire coach Charles Manda can afford a sigh of relief after the club’s executive committee assured him of his job’s safety despite supporters calls for his head.

Some Civo supporters on Wednesday were agitating for Manda’s firing  after a dismal performance that led to 0-1 loss at the hands of visiting Blue Eagles.

The loss meant Civo are deep in relegation zone, second from the bottom on 21 points.

But Civo United general secretary Thomas Makiwa said the committee will not fire Manda.

“It is the wrong time to be firing a coach and as an executive committee we are not going to disengage the services of Manda. At this stage in the league, it is time to unite and work together to ensure our team is not relegated. We cannot be firing each other,” said Makiwa.

“The good thing is that the battle is in our hands. We are not banking on other teams. We just need to win three games and we are safe,” he said.

Manda said he is not giving up the fight as there is still a chance to beat relegation.

“We have five game and we need to focus on winning these matches and staying in the league. We are not giving up as there is a lot to fight for. It is important that we stay in the Super League.” he said.

Civo have five fixtures to wrap up the season.

With Max Bullets having pulled out of the league, Civo are assured of three points.

They play title contenders Kamuzu Barracks (KB) tomorrow at home, but they will be on the road against Mafco FC at the Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa.

They also play Nyasa Big Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium.

Meanwhile, the battle for points resumes this weekend.

Another relegation-battling outfit PremierBet Wizards host Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium tomorrow.

Silver Strikers will be at home against Red Lions.

The Bankers, who are on position five with 44 points from 25 matches, have a chance to put their title bid back on track if they beat Lions.

A victory will see them move to second position with 49 points.

But they have to pray that second-placed KB, who are unbeaten at home this season, stumble against Civo.

On Sunday, Karonga United host Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium.

Karonga are on position 14 with 24 points while Moyale are eighth.

Lions wrap the Central Region trip with a fixture against Epac FC at Civo Stadium.
