Cleric warns against aiding foreigners

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi, the Right Reverend Alinafe Kalemba, has cautioned people in Chiradzulu against assisting non-Malawians during the ongoing national identity (ID) cards registration exercise.

The bishop was speaking at Nasulu School in Sabola Village in Traditional Authority Mchema in the district last Sunday after conducting a number of pastoral engagements.

Kalemba said Malawians should jealously safeguard the registration process so that nobody manipulates them to allow non-Malawians get access to the Malawi national ID.

“It is a must that all Malawians get registered and I urge all of you not to fail even if you find the queues unbearable, just follow the right procedures, you will get it done.

“However, be cautious on who you assist because it is illegal and dangerous to help a foreigner to get a Malawi national ID. In fact, it is a sin because the Bible commands us not to lie or bear false witness,” he said.

Last month, police in Mchinji arrested two people for allegedly photocopying and selling registration forms to some residents of the district, including foreigners. n
