Chiphiko, who also chairs Parliament’s Budget and Finance Committee, expressed his reservations after touring some of the projects last Thursday to assess progress.

At a bridge in Kawale I, the MP said he was not happy with the progress, observing that the contractor inflated the values and quantities of materials.

He said: “This is pure theft. Even without involving [professional] valuers, the quantities of materials said to have been used here do not match what I am seeing on the ground.

“I will engage private valuers and will inform the Anti-Corruption Bureau [ACB] and I may even involve government’s director of buildings.”

However, Kenneth Mseka, director for the construction firm, said what was reflected on paper is exactly what was used on the bridge.

He said: “I personally delivered the rocks, sand and the other materials here, so I know that the materials were indeed used on this bridge.”

Lilongwe City Council public relations officer Tamara Chafunya said the council would investigate the concerns.
