Minister of Education Science and Technology Emmanuel Fabiano has commended the College of Medicine (CoM), a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima) for producing outstanding medical personnel for the Malawi’s health sector and achieving remarkable results in research and science technology in the 25 years of its existence.

Speaking in Blantyre on Monday when he launched the college’s one week silver jubilee celebrations, Fabiano said the development of the college during the past 25 years has been a great inspiration to many people both within and outside Malawi.

“The statistics on the achievements speak for themselves. The research output of the College has been phenomenal for such a relatively young institution. The College has trained outstanding health professionals, it has indeed proved wrong the doubting Thomases” he said.
In his remarks Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Professor John Kalenga Saka, described the anniversary as a moment of reflection and time to undertake a comprehensive retrospective analysis of the college.

“This is the time to reflect on how we are doing in our research programmes, how relevant is our research work towards improved health care services, and how the new generation of new academics is engaged towards a sustainable academy,” Saka said.

The college Principal Mwapatsa Mipando called on the ministry to help the college secure more resources that it needs for improving the environment of the college.

He shared the vision for the college to turn into an independent public university.

“It is my conviction that CoM can do a lot better than what we are now. We need to change if we are to maintain our centrality in the midst of new institutions of higher learning and the different competing priorities,” he emphasised.
