Communities demand written agreement with contractors

Communities around Nkula Hydro-Electric Power Station have called on contractors at the site to provide written promises which they will fulfil.

The call was made during sensitisation meetings on Friday at a Rehabilitation Works and Environment and Natural Resources Management Project funded by Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

“We have had a bad experience with [a previous contractor] whom Nkula ‘A’ rehabilitation has also contracted. They promised to meet our expectations, but have since turned their backs on us,” said Mary Maulidi Khembo, member of Parliament (MP) for Neno South.

Neno district commissioner (DC)  Memory Monteiro said the people of Neno were happy with the new big project because it was of national importance. However, she said there was need for a written agreement with the contractors that clearly stipulates what will happen should they destroy the existing environment and social services.

Communications and outreach director at Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Zilani Khonje said she was happy with the feedback they got from the consultations.
