Community arrest, mob defilement suspect

People at Thunula in Nkhata Bay assaulted a 36-year-old man suspected of defiling a girl four times younger.

Nkhata Bay Police Station spokesperson Cecilia Mfune confirmed that the suspect, identified as Bahat Mhone, was in their custody for assaulting a girl aged eight.

The suspect survived with a bruised face

According to Mfune, the man allegedly committed the offence on Monday at Thanula.

He is a distant relative to the victim, she said.

Mfune said: “He called the girl to his house where he defiled her and gave her K400 not to reveal the matter.

“Her mother went to search for her at the suspect’s house after noticing that she delayed to come back home. He denied knowing her whereabouts, but the girl ran after her mother as they left the suspect’s house.”

Members of community policing arrested Mhone and handed him over to police.

The man’s face was bruised by blows from irate villagers who surrendered him to the law enforcers.

According to Mfune, the girl underwent medical checkups at Nkhata Bay District Hospital which confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

Mhone comes from Chipoyola Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Timbiri, Nkhata Bay.

The police in the shoreline hailed the general public for taking part in the fight against child abuse.
