Cougars were crowned King of the Courts on Sunday after beating Bravehearts 70-55 at a packed Civo Basketball court in Lilongwe.

It was a dismal performance from Bravehearts as they failed to match the sheer aggressiveness of their opponents who dominated in all the quarters.

Urged on by Peter Mdulamizu who had 17 points, Cougars were on song from start to finish. They went away with K2 million ultimate prize courtesy of G.Y Imports and Exports and Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) who jointly contributed towards the prize money.

Celebration time for Bravehearts Ladies

Mdulamizu was named the most valuable player (MVP).

Last year’s champions Magang’a finished a distant fourth after losing 56-60 to Crazy Warriors in a third-place contest.

While their men counterparts stumbled, Bravehearts Ladies team put up a great performance to beat Dynamites 65-42 to successfully defend the Queen of the Courts crown.

England netball export Joyce Mvula stole the show as she led Bravehearts in offence.

Mvula had 28 points, seven rebounds and five blocks and deservedly won the MVP accolade.

The ladies final game nearly got spoiled by rains and had to be stopped briefly.

Cougars coach Sebe Chidothi was delighted with the triumph.

“It was all about discipline and hard work. The players responded well,” she said.

Bravehearts coach Lisungu Banda-Moyo—whose team got K1.5 million— attributed her team’s success to proper game plan.

RBM director of administration Patrick Mhango described the finals as exciting.

“It is evident that the game of basketball is growing. The stands are high from what we have seen today,” he said. n
