Blantyre City Council (BCC) officials, accompanied by armed police officers, invaded premises vendors use to ply their trade at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) on Friday and prevented them from displaying their items.

The vendors, who returned to QECH some months ago and made the place look shabby, were selling food items, drinks, clothes, kitchen utensils among other items.

BCC public relations manager Anthony Kasunda said in response to a questionnaire that the council team, accompanied by police, arrived at 4 am and prevented the vendors from displaying their merchandise.

He said the council pulled down stalls erected by the vendors.

Kasunda said: “Vendors were asked to re-locate to Kamba Market, which is their designated place of trading.”

He said every vendor should now be aware that it is illegal to display or do business along the streets.

Kasunda said the exercise of clearing the streets of vending is an ongoing one.

“As a council, we will endeavour to make our city clean by ensuring that trading is done in designated places.

“As you may be aware, the Mayor of Blantyre launched Keep the City Clean and Green campaign, one of the things is to keep vendors off the streets. We should all join hands to bring back the city’s lost glory,” he said.
