Police in Dedza are looking for a woman suspected to have stolen a new born baby in the district on Monday.
According to Dedza Police Station spokesperson Edward Kabango, the suspect went to Dauya Village in Traditional Authority Kaphuka where she introduced herself as owner of an orphanage in Blantyre.

Kabango: Don’t entrust babies with strangers

Kabango said the woman told village headman Dauya that she had information about a poor pregnant girl in the village.
He further said the woman volunteered to take the girl to Blantyre, an offer the chief and the girl’s mother accepted.

“The two spent the night at the boma but the following day the expectant girl experienced labour pains. The strange woman took her to Dedza District Hospital where she delivered a baby. They were discharged on April 5,” said Kabango

The spokesperson said the suspect took the new mother in her vehicle and told her they were going to police to make a formal report that she was taking the two of them.

“On the way, the woman pretended to have forgotten something and dropped the new mother near the police junction, telling her to leave the baby in the vehicle. She never came back,” said Kabango.
Police have since warned the public not to entrust their children with strangers. 
